good food/good books

i just ate dinner, but as soon as that finishes digesting (did you know that if you rub your stomach clockwise, it speeds up digestion? just don’t go the other way!) i’m going to eat a piece of flourless chocolate cake. it’s the shit. right now my mom and brother are eating glucose free, which completely eliminates wheat/flour from their diets. this is because glucose gives my mom headaches and gives my brother an array of problems i’m not going to go into detail about. i’m not sure if that’s why she baked this cake, but glucose or not, it’s fucking delicious. right now i weigh 112lbs, which is quite a bit more than the beginning of the year (102lbs). i feel a lot more comfortable with a bit more weight on my bones, and i’d like to get to 115lbs just to see how it feels. lucky for me the only work that requires is eating a lot of flourless chocolate cake, etc. this will not be hard.

today i finished reading a book called “the thing about life is that one day you’ll be dead” by david shields. essentially, it is about how the body decays over time. i don’t know if it’s depressing or not, but it is very interesting. the entire book is littered with facts that i would have probably never learned otherwise, such as:

  • By your 80s, you “no longer even have a distinctive odor … You’re vanishing.”
  • “The brain of a 90-year-old is the same size as that of a 3-year-old.”
  • “After you turn 7, your risk of dying doubles every eight years.”
  • “Men who are hanged sometimes have erections and orgasms which are caused by the snapping of the spinal cord; when the nerves beneath the neck are severed from the spine, the spasm can create a mechanical, reflexive ejaculation.”

it’s not just filled with factual information, it’s also autobiographical with tid-bits and pieces of his own life, and his father’s, which i always enjoy. this, of couse, is a very simplistic summary so you should actually go check it out yourself. or, listen to this interveiw with david shields:

(click “Listen!”) it’s the second segment, but you may as well listen to the first half too because it’s interesting as well.

time for flourless chocolate cake.
